Local Sustainable Initiatives
Sodexo is dedicated to corporate citizenship and sustaining our planet. Our goals are to focus on the environment, economy and society as a whole through various efforts. Here, at the University of Denver, we are working to make our campus dining and retail operations more earth-friendly.
We have implemented the following programs to improve your environment, economy and society:
Environmental
- We provide 100% reusable wares in both resident dining halls with the exception of straws and napkins.
- All of our straws are biodegradable and napkins are made from 100% recycled materials.
- Our hot cups are disposable and made with 10% post-consumer recycled materials.
- We allow patrons to bring their own reusable mug for a discount on purchases.
- In 2008, we banned polystyrene (a.k.a. Stryofoam) from all of our operations on campus.
- We switched our dish washing systems to Apex by EcoLab, which helps reduce the use of water.
- In 2009, we started composting all organic waste through biological processes into fertilizer at both resident dining halls.
- We provide easy access to recycling containers at all of our facilities on campus.
- We implemented Trayless Tuesdays to help reduce food waste.
Economy
- Currently, we purchase locally grown produce from seven growers in Colorado: Palisade peaches, Olathe Corn, Rocky Ford Cantaloupes, Fagerberg Onions, Brighton Green Beans, Brighton Cabbage, Alamosa Mushrooms.
- We also purchase locally processed milk and milk products from Robinson Dairy, which are antibiotic and rBGH/rBST free.
- Purchase products from local processors: Colorado Ranchers Dairy, Mouco Cheese Company, Sparboe Farms, Ready Foods, Moutain States Rosen, Mission Foods, Markon/Rakhra Mushroom and Condies Salad Co.
- Our retail operations offer Fair Trade, Organic, Rain Forest Alliance Certified and Bird Friendly coffees at all of our locations on campus.
- We strive to create value to stimulate the economy by offering special coupons and deals to our customers.
- We foster employee training and development.
- Students and local workers are hired to work at our dining locations on campus.
- In September 2009, 15% of our dining room purchases were from local sources, including peaches, cantaloupe, mushrooms, corn, dairy products and bread.
Society
- All of our excess food is donated weekly to Food Bank of the Rockies.
- We have implemented hygiene standards and food safety programs for all workers.
- We strive to control risks and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.
- Our Simply to Go, In Season , and Balance, Mind, Body and Soul programs are designed to promote healthy eating and aid in the fight against obesity.
- Our STOP Hunger and Helping Hands campaigns help the fight against hunger and malnutrition by providing food and assistance to local organizations.
